Paul originally trained as a physical therapist with a special interest in sports-related injuries. After establishing his physical therapy career, he qualified for the Canadian National Biathlon Team, and spent a number of years abroad training and competing in international events. After retiring from sport, Paul studied and trained in the old world art of violin bow making, learning his craft under the tutelage of several renowned international violin bow makers, including William Salchow and Michael Vann.
Paul uses his observation skills and knowledge of biomechanics, in combination with his skills as a bow maker, to assess the ideal characteristics of the bow for specific players. He currently designs and builds custom-made bows, and regularly completes bow restoration projects and repairs. He works out of his home-based studio in Edmonton.
Amongst Paul's clients are professional and amateur musicians across all genres of music including members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, fiddle contest winners, music teachers and students (classical, bluegrass/Celtic/old time fiddling, jazz).
Paul sources his materials from ethical sources, and uses only the finest quality wood (primarily Pernambuco, Snakewood, & Ebony), leather, horsehair, fossilized mastodon ivory, and mother of pearl/shell products.
